About Survival Knives

When your life depends on them, survival knives are engineered to handle challenging circumstances. They are tough use tools and can be put to work for cutting, prying, whittling, self-defense, and many other jobs. The Buck Knives 550 Selector 2.0 Exchangeable Blade Folding Midlock Hunting Knife with 3 Interchangeable Blades & Sheath, 420HC Steel, Nylon Handle, Black can potentially work as a survival knife depending on the situation.

Components of a Knife

The main parts of the knife are the blade, hilt, handle, tang, and pommel or butt. The tang is the piece of metal that runs the complete length of the knife from pommel to tip. The pommel or butt is at the back of the knife (end toward the cutter when held normally in hand).

Fixed Blade VS Folding Survival Knives

There are a number of various types of knives including fixed blades and folding knives. Fixed blades are typically better suited for large cutting jobs. The strength of the blade helps the cutter control the knife edge more effectively, and the blade normally holds up better over the long run. Typical fixed blade knives include full-length hunting knives, backpacking knives, battle knives, and sashimi knives. Folding knives are more compact than fixed blade knives and easily carried in a pocket for every-day-carry (EDC). The way the blade folds into the handle makes it a practical option for smaller sized blades. Some folding knives have lockouts that help keep the blade in position when unfolded. This imitates a fixed blade while keeping the benefits of a folder. Lockouts are mechanical and can fail if extreme pressure is applied to the folding knife blade.

Buck Knives Knife Blade Care and Maintenance

Buck Knives knives should be cared for and maintained effectively to maximize their useful life as a cutting tool. Blade upkeep includes sometimes honing the edge with a grinder, whetstone, or diamond sharpener and rubbing the blade down with a light coat of oil.

Some of these weapon related laws may apply to the Buck Knives 550 Selector 2.0 Exchangeable Blade Folding Midlock Hunting Knife with 3 Interchangeable Blades & Sheath, 420HC Steel, Nylon Handle, Black. There are a couple of basic guidelines you can follow when carrying a blade.

Beware possessing knives concealed because this classifies the knife as a concealed carry weapon (CCW). Some states have guidelines limiting particular things like blade lengths over 3 inches. For fixed blade knives, carry them on your belt when you are working outside, camping, hiking, or out adventuring in the outdoors.

For folding blade knives, once again be careful of carrying folding blade lengths over 3 inches concealed on your body. If your region or state mandates it, look into getting a CCW license. Knives which have assisted opening abilities or auto openers are generally restricted.

Take care possessing knives in areas around government structures, universities, and public events. Many special occasions like sporting events, county fairs, and shows do not allow knives of any kind and security will take them upon entry.
