About Survival Knives

Survival knives are engineered for tough conditions when your survival depends on them. They are hard use tools and can be put to work for cutting, pulling objects apart, whittling, self defense, and lots of other tasks. The MTECH USA XTREME MX-8119 Fixed Blade Tactical Knife, 11.5 Overall can potentially work as a survival knife depending on the situation.

Parts of a Knife

The main parts of the knife are the blade, hilt, grip, tang, and pommel or butt. The tang is the piece of metal that runs the complete length of the knife from pommel to point. The pommel or butt is at the rear of the knife (end toward the cutter when held typically in hand).

Fixed Blade VS Folding Survival Knives

There are a number of different types of knives including fixed blades and folding knives. Fixed blades are usually much better for big cutting jobs. The toughness of the blade helps the cutter control the knife edge better, and the blade typically holds up better over the long term. Typical fixed blade knife types include full-length hunting knives, backpacking knives, battle knives, and sushi knives. Folding knives are more compact than fixed blade knives and quickly carried in a pocket or with a belt clip for every-day-carry (EDC). The way the blade folds into the handle makes it a practical alternative for smaller pocket knives. Some folding knives have lockouts that help keep the blade in position when unfolded. This simulates a fixed blade while keeping the advantages of a folder. Keep in mind that lockouts are mechanical and can stop working if intense pressure is applied to the folding knife blade.

MTECH USA XTREME Knife Blade Care and Maintenance

MTECH USA XTREME knives need to be cared for and maintained appropriately to optimize their functional life as a cutting tool. Blade upkeep includes periodically sharpening the edge with a whetstone, diamond, or grinder sharpener and rubbing the blade down with a light coat of oil.

Knife Laws and Bladed Weapon Carry Laws

A large number of states, regions, and locations have guidelines about wearing knives and bladed weapons. Some of these weapon associated laws may apply to the MTECH USA XTREME MX-8119 Fixed Blade Tactical Knife, 11.5 Overall. The laws depend on things like the type of knife, how the knife is carried, the blade length, and the areas where the knife is carried. When carrying a blade, there are a couple of basic guidelines you can follow.

Beware possessing knives concealed considering that this classifies the knife as a concealed carry weapon (CCW). Some states have standards limiting specific things like blade lengths over 3 inches. For fixed blade knives, carry them on your belt when you are working outside, outdoor camping, exploring, or out adventuring in the outdoors.

For folding blade knives, again beware of carrying folding blade lengths over 3 inches concealed on your body. Check out getting a CCW license if your region or state requires it. Knives which have assisted opening capabilities or automatic opening knives are normally limited.

Be careful carrying knives in areas around government buildings, schools, and public gatherings. Many special occasions like sporting events, county fairs, and concerts do not allow knives of any kind and security will seize them upon entry.
